Birmingham International Comic Show 08

Last weekend Sarah and I attended Birmingham International Comic Show 2008 - hosted at the Think Tank – and had a very good time. Admittedly we were a tad disappointed when we first arrived as it wasn’t as extensive as we’d pictured. But once we’d looked at the list of lectures being given by famous artists and writers from the industry, we realised there was actually a lot that we could get out of it.

We came away from the weekend with lots of ideas for improving our own webcomic, and as we had only been running for a few weeks we’ve decided to start again from the beginning.

One of the most interesting parts of the weekend for us was talking to independent comic writers and artist who had their own stalls. Sarah and I have set ourselves the objective of returning without our own stall in two years time. Maybe we’ll see you there…? :)

Web Comic Gallery – Modern Teaching Methods

The ‘Web Comic Gallery’ has been updated with the latest comic, straight out of Em’s birthday card.  Take a look now, why not?

Web Comic – College Employment

The ‘Web Comic Gallery’ has been updated with the latest strip, fresh from a colleague’s birthday card. Also, the Gifts section of the ‘Miniature Gallery’ now features a new model.

Web Comic – A Birthday Visitor.

It was Wilkie’s birthday last week and this was his birthday comic. I really wish I had the time and the inspiration to draw more often, but I can only seem to manage it when the moment comes to fill all that white space in people’s birthday cards.

Web Comic – Writer’s Block

When I originally started drawing comics for the blog, I intended to to one every week or so. But as you may have guess, I never found the time. However, I do still draw in people’s birthday cards, and it was Sven’s birthday this month. Web Comic 007 – Writer’s Block.

Web Comic – Another Birthday

Another Birthday comic has been added to the Web Comic Gallery, this time from Em’s birthday card. Also the Leyden Jar page is now finally finished, after a month or two of procrastination on my part. Finally, if you’re wondering what looks different, I completed the site upgrade last night, so theadverts are now gone from the top of the page. :)

The Price of ‘Popularity’

Recently ‘What Smells Like Blog’ has undergone a large increase in visitors and a sharp drop in amount of bandwidth free at the end of each month, with completely zero remaining at the end of May. A quick visit to Sven’s handily coded ‘Viewer Stats’ page revealed that by far the most popular item on this site is the ‘Birthday’ web comic, featuring the Bad News Squid.

Further delving by Sven himself revealed that said cartoon is number one on Google Image Search if you search for the phrase “Comic Birthday”. While it’s nice to be first on Google for something, even something as obscure as this, thirty percent of my bandwidth for this month has already been used in the first five days of the month!

Due to this, and the fact that I’d like to make a bit more of this website, I’ll soon be upgrading to a better Shortal account, one without adverts and a 500 Mb data transfer allowance, rather than the current 50 Mb. Therefore some changes should become evident at some point this week. Hopefully this will also motivate me to finish off certain extra areas of this site, such as the Leyden Jar page. As ever; “watch this space!”

Web Comic – Birthday Surprise

Heh, it seems the only chance I get to draw cartoons these days is when a friend celebrates their birthday and the barren interior of their card is in desperate need of some decoration. Just so this comic makes sense, I should explain that for his birthday, Alex has received a voucher for one of those “drive a race car for a day” outings. Although he’d never admit it, I’m confident that his chosen place of safety for said voucher is securely down the front of his underwear, so strongly does he covert this experience.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s Web Comic 006 – Birthday Surprise.

Web Comics – Speech Therapy and Hats

Hurrah! I found the missing web comic file, which I’ve now added to the gallery, along with a brand new one. Web comic archives here.

Web Comic – Birthday

A new comic has been added to the gallery. It was originally drawn in Sven’s birthday card, but I was so pleased with it I scanned it in and put it up here as well. Click below to view.
